H2O

Well the water has receeded, the front street looks completely normal - you would never have known it was flooded. The back garden is almost back to normal. Peter's hutch is now drying out, but we had to throw out his bale of straw. Tonight he will be sleeping in the cat basket. The poor mite he was up to his neck in the water this morning, standing on some bricks we had placed in his run to stop him digging tunnels out again. He's a very lucky bunny.

These are some pictures of the brook that runs down Cambridge Street, you can see it was pretty wet.

Knee Deep in Water

When I woke this morining it seemed like any other day, that was until I opened the front room blinds - cor blimey we're flooding!

Poor Peter rabbit was almost drowned.

after this photo was taken his hutch upturned

Her First Book

Emily enjoys reading her first book with Dad. (Liz and Roger - many thanks for the book tokens, Emily now has 4 books in her collection)

3G-reeeat

Just got my bargain £1 3G Orange sim card from ebay today. Placed it in phone, called orange to arrange transfer of account to new sim etc, and 10 minutes later we are up and running. Hurrah - this means I can now send and receive pictures and video messages on my phone!

Bagpuss - Old Cloth Cat

Murphy was loosing weight again so I decided he should finally go to the vet for his yearly checkup. I have to admit for a 15 year old cat he's doing pretty well, despite the bullying incident which has frightened him off going outside to wee. Murphy had been displaying some odd behaviour of dragging his bum on the floor and I figured his anal glands were blocked and not one for squeezing puss filled spots I decided the vet was the best person to do it. Murphy protested at being put in the cat basket, protested loudly at the vets and protested even louder when he had his temperature taken (even I was a bit upset by this - but it's the only way). He hissed after having a blood sample and boy you should have heard Murphy swear when he was having his glands emptied - yuk!

Turns out my old boy is not doing too well and is beginning to suffer from renal disease. I consulted my friend Becky, who is also vet, on this matter. Her advise was well received and I can't thank her enough for setting my mind at rest about how to treat the problem and alleviate any suffering. So it looks like Murphy will be on a new diet from now on, with the occasional vitamin injection, which he had today and I must say he perked up a heck of alot - wolfing down a packet of his new diet wet food and then having a good helping of some of his new diet dry food. I have to say I've never seen him look so interested in his food.

I know it's not a curable condition but the diet should help sustain him a bit longer and I know that at some point in the future we will have to look at putting my dear kitty to sleep.

I've never contemplated a future without any cats and now I'm facing it for real as Elvis will be heading back to his folks when they return from Oz later this year and then Murphy won't be here too. I know I've sworn that I'll have no more pets after this but I've always loved my kitties and still miss my original cats Johnny (Honk Farty Pants), Timmy and Kitty - they were all taken to kitty heaven when they were young. I honestly can't see me being without a kitty friend roaming the house, eating bugs and sleeping in the sun spots.

Cats rule!

By Request

some more photos of Emily - doing what she does best, lying around and posing for cameras.

Respect

I'd just like to mention in my early morning blog today a big Yo Respect to Hamish who died last week. Hamish was Alison and Neils westie dog. He will be sadly missed by those who knew him. A lovely cuddly white bear who used to howl at me like a wolf whenever I was walking up the stairs to Alisons flat.
Hamish - I'll miss you. x

MOT's

Looking back over the last year my body has undergone a radical change. It undertook the nurturing of Emily from conception to birth, endured 4 months of horrendous morning sickness followed by another 5 months of nausea. Also with various aches and pains, sore hips, heartburn, cramps, a damned hot summer, swollen legs and ankles, passing out, blood tests and scans. Culminated by a 4 hour labour, post natal recovery and 8 weeks of broken sleep. Thankfully Emily has been sleeping through the night now for the last 7 weeks - and I hope that continues. I've gone from an 8st runner to a whopping (mumbles something about 2 and a half stone heavier) equalling a large barrel by the end of the pregnancy. Luckily I lost a lot immediately after the birth and have only 7lbs to loose (if I choose). Even though some things still wobble I'm well on the way to regaining my fitness. I've started running again and have joined a local running group, Tae Kwon Do is still on the menu combined with some weight training and bike turbo training at home when I can fit it in. This year I think my body will pass it's MOT.

I was going to add that unlike my body my car didn't pass it's MOT - but I got a surprise today when it did! I think that's the first time in 4 years that the blooming thing has passed an MOT first time.

New Year New Me

Emily attended her first party yesterday, she was invited to Digi's 2nd Birthday Party - complete with a very cool indoor inflatable bouncy castle!

Fun was had by all, even though a young kid decided not to heed Phoebes warning that she was holding a baby and bounce ontop of Emily and Phoebe in the Bouncy Castle. This made Emily cry as well as upset Phoebe - I was non too pleased neither but hey kids get knocked and bumped about all the time (well not by my own personal hand - eek hope the police don't turn up at my door!) . Anyway transpires that bouncy kid comes from a family where there are no or very little rules - it became apparent after just 10 mins of this family's 3 kids charging around, wrestling and hogging the slide. I had to wrestle my hands to my side to stop me taking a swing at the little cherubs >:!

Anyway this picture is of little angelic Grace (it was her birthday too - Happy Birthday)

(not sure how this kid managed to get his head in the shot!)

I think this is Bam Bam - he was quite chilled despite the fact he was in the same room as 18 nutty kids :)

Awww so cute when she sucks her thumb :)

Shop Till I Drop

I got up at 2.30 am today, not of my own doing of course that would be mad. Phoebe had a nose bleed and woke me up. I just told her to forget about the fact that she's dripped some blood on the bathroom carpet - hey she's an expert in handling her own nosebleeds these days. Anyway she was fine, it was a small nose bleed but I couldn't get back to sleep afterwards as I was getting up at 3.45 anyway to head off to the Next Sale. How mad is that? Some of you may point out that this is very mad indeed. So I've had 3 hours sleep, been to a Next sale and was home by 8.20am in time to feed Emily (yes she slept from 9pm till 8am - what a trooper!). Oh but I wasn't done shopping as we've been busy over the last 2 weeks preparing Emilys room. Walls have been painted Russian Velvet and cream, the woodwork has been spruced up and Drew built the cot. All we needed now was some bedding - so off we went to Kiddicare in Peterborough - purchased some white bed linen and a baby monitor. Hey presto it's now 9.05 pm and Emily is sweetly asleep in her own room. I'm blogging and listening to a baby monitor at the same time - multi-tasking is a full time job eh!

Parental Leave

Last night we made it out on our own and togther for the first time in 3 months! It's a strange experience not having Emily around, I'm so used to being constantly busy with her or some other household chore. It was nice to get out as we had a lovely meal, which I think was Heinz tomato soup, followed by salmon on vegetable mash (with added brussel sprouts from the other guests) and then for dessert a lovely chocolate mousse. We caught up with some friends from work, Drew played blackjack and then we headed home just after 11. Norty babysitters had let Emily stay up with them, so we had to get her to bed. But I'm glad to say that after a bottle she went to sleep pretty well, no sleeping in though she still woke at 6.30 and 8.30 for a feed - ha hence why I'm blogging at 9am!

Ah lovely the postman has just arrived, I'm of to check out my large collection of junk mail.:)

Funniest thing I've heard over the last week "Pump and Dump" - thanks again to MrsL for this one. Us breast-feeding chicks know what that means!

Don't Get Done Get Dom!

He he i'm still laughing about this, but here's the story.
Whilst watching daytime TV (yeah I can hear the groans already!) I watched a programme called Don't Get Done Get Dom, which involved Dominic Littlewood, of To Buy or Not To Buy and Beat the Burglar, blagging bargains for everyday consumers on the street. Ok fast forward at the end of this show they asked people to email in if they would like to go on the show. So I did. I emailed Dom saying that I was after a recordable DVD or failing that if it made their programme more interesting I was after a newer second hand car. Well I got a call yesterday morning from one of the producers asking if I would like to go to London (they pay the train fair) and go on their show to try to purchase a DVD recorder. Brilliant I said, I'm up for that! Today they rang to arrange more details where I will be going to London on the 9th January, pretend to be a punter on the street looking to buy a DVD recorder and hey presto Dominic gets me a bargain DVD recorder - sweet!
This is my second claim to fame - my first being in Murder in Suburbia, which I have hanging around on DVD somewhere, in which I played a SOCO (scene of crime officer). Ah the life of stardom.

Autographs anyone?

13 days to go!

Well the panic is on now. I've only managed to send out my Christmas cards this week, and have only bought presents for a few people. I still have loads more to get and my diary is chocca! Today I've been for a 2 mile run (this time I managed to get my speed down to 9mins per mile - horrah!), watched Phoebes Christmas play (well an hour of it at least), bought a new Digital Camera (Canon A710 IS with 2GB SD card, a leather case and battery charger) and had a chat with the producers of the daytime TV show called "Don't Get Done Get Dom" so I may be appearing on TV soon if I get a call back :) Now I have to go to the gym and do some weights before the kids get back from school, and try to get some Xmas shopping done on line whilst dropping off and picking up Phoebe from another Christmas play tonight - aw well another busy night in the Henderson-Scott household.

3am Wake up Call

After deciding to go to bed early and setting our alarm clocks to make sure we were awake to prepare Phoebe's lunch for today, Emily decided to scare the bejesus out of us at 3 am by screaming her head off. I flew out of bed to pick her up and see if it was just a bad dream or she was hungry - nope it wasn't that and she continued to scream. We've never heard her scream and cry so loud it was heart breaking to listen to. We decided to do a pant check in case she had an upset tummy - so the pair of us ran downstairs and opened the nappy. Nope, nowt not a thing to see, and she still screamed. We were now worried as this was really begining to scare us. I picked her up and she decided to let off some ahem steam (fart) that seemed to help a little, so we put a nappy on (just in case it was more than some wind that was being released) and proceeded to hug and rock her. Drew somehow managed to calm her down and she finally fell asleep in his arms after a few sobs. We still aren't sure what the heck bothered her. Was it was an upset tummy or being too hot?

She's fine today - as if nothing had happened. Unlike the pair of us who look slightly frazzled :)

Nappies and Nerds

I think I've finally succumbed to placenta brain syndrome. All I have to blog about are dirty nappies (Em's producing 2 horrendous ones in 2 days - mmm thanks!). I keep forgetting to phone people, to do things and when I sit at the computer to fulfill a particular need I get sucked into something completely different. I did manage to make an appointment to see the optician though - lets hope I don't forget to keep the appointment next week. :)

On another note I wish Mr and Mrs D good luck today with their scan.

Sending some big hug vibes your way - :-)

Raving Mad

Once again I wake up to find some local scroats have wrecked my car by smashing off my wing mirror. Grrr - it really annoys me that they continue to trash people cars on this street and the police continue to do very little about it. Luckily I met Ian from another house down the road who is also a victim of this crime. He advised to keep getting onto the police and maybe (ha yeah right) they can get some action from the council to install CCTV that will cover this street.

Pee and Pounds
We took Emily to the Baby Clinic yesterday to get her weighed etc. So at 10am the 3 of us toddled out of the house and bimbled down the road to our local Doctors surgery. Now get this we are talking about a baby clinic and what kind of set up do they have? They have the Clinic upstairs in the surgery - eh what - 10 people turn up with buggies and prams just so we have to leave them downstairs unattended and then hike up 2 flights of stairs to get to the one roomed clinic!! Come one people use some common sense, it would have been far simpler and easier to use a room downstairs. Anyway Emily showed her disgust by peeing all over the scales and desk - good girl! She now weighs a healthy 13lb, sleeps for 9 hours every night and eats all day long.

Number 1's - what was number 1 on your birthday?
http://hit40uk.somethinelse.com
Christmas
I know you don't want to admit it but it's finally here. You can't get away from all the advertising on TV, radio, magazines, newspapers and even the internet. Best thing is to give in to it but don't believe the hype. Not every child needs £500 worth of gifts and toys that end up either in bits or gathering dust at some later stage. No instead send all your lovely gifts to me and if you can't think of what to get me then some John Lewis vouchers would be nice or try this site
Ha ha only joking folks. I don't need a thing as I have everything I could wish for at the moment, 2 beautiful children, loving partner and some wonderful friends - even though I do have my eyes on a DVD recorder, a food processor and Lost Season2 on DVD - drat that addictive programme.
Milk and Honey

Last week I was speaking to one of my fellow Tae Kwon Do buddies and he was asking how my milk maggot was doing!
(yuk)

somehow I don't see the similarity.

Anyway I've had a nice day out with Mrs T and her baby Boo and toddling Digi, and Mrs L with Jack Jack. The boys ran around, jumped, slid, bounced and dived in the ball pit, whilst Baby Boo smiled alot (and I mean alot - bet her face aches!) . Emily being herself ate lots and slept some more, whilst the ladies chatted and drank tea/coffee. I can't wait for Emily to grow some more and start playing and running around, mind you I think the DVD and CD collection will be in for some abuse at that point. We will have to rethink the layout of the living room at some point - sigh.

Anyway girls if you are interested in some 2-for-1 beauty vouchers or some plastic surgery check out January's issue of Eve magazine. mmmm restylene here I come...

Sleepovers

Phoebe had her birthday sleepover party last night and to be honest having 6 young girls in the house wasn't too disturbing or destructive. The played some Eye-Toy games on the playstation which kept them amused for an hour, then they ate (very little) pizza and drank cola. Next they dashed upstairs and played with their Nintendo DS's - very hi-tech bunch of girls! After that they ate some chocolate cake and ran oustide to play with sparklers. Thankfully no injuries! After that it was bedtime so all the girls got ready and covered Phoebes bedroom floor with sleeping bags and watched DVD's whilst eating chocolate covered marshmallows.

Preparing for the party, balloon blower master! some crazy chics and fire!

New Shoes
I ordered some new running shoes yesterday, and I was delighted when they turned up this morning. All shiny and new! So I popped them on and decided to take myself off for a run. Now I haven't been able to run due to obvious reasons for the past 11 months and boy it hurt, it hurt a lot. My lungs were screaming for oxygen and my legs were complaining that I wasn't going slow enough and that was only at the 8 minute mark. I managed to keep on running around the park before I got home, completing approximately 2 miles in 21 minutes. Very slow but very pleasing at the same time. I was amazed that so many muscles were out of shape, even my stomach was hurting. Well it can only be onwards and upwards now, the first few runs are always the worst and I'm looking forward to improving my distance and time.

Emily Week 10
I would like to apologise to all the people who have left comments on my blog, I've upgraded to a new version of blogger and have just found all your comments! Drats - annoyed that I didn't see that before.

xxx

Here's 10 week old Emily - Giraffe Hugger!

Big Girls
Yesterday was my little girls 10th birthday, well she isn't so little anymore! She's still a good few inches shorter than me but I reckon it won't be long before she is towering above me. It was such an occasion for her reaching double digits and I have to admit I felt emotional about it too. I know that soon she will leave the small girly stage and fully embrace teenager hood, and that it may be a troublesome journey in parts. Yet I can console myself whilst typing this blog little Emily sits on my lap sleeping and dreaming of milk filled smiley days. I know we are lucky being able to repeat this precious childhood again.

Needles and Tears

Emily had her first set of injections this afternoon. Not a pleasant thing to have to have done, so I let Drew hold her while the nurse administered the first one, Emily cried. The tears flowed for a few seconds and then she was quiet. Drew then had to turn her round so the nurse could give Emily her second injection in her other thigh. Once again the tears flowed and she cried, this time with more anger. My poor baby having to suffer. It made me very anxious, and even more worried that we have to come back in another month for another injection. Emily cried for a while after her injections, all I could do to comfort her was to feed her. She ate well though, as she probably needed a lot of comforting. Now we have to wait and see if she has any side effects like a fever. We may be in for a disturbed night. She has been doing so well with sleeping for about 7 hours every night for the past week. Even last night she slept for 8 hours, only getting up at 5 for a quick feed, then back down for a snooze until 7.30 when she wakes for another feed and a cuddle in our bed.

She has turned out to be a very good baby so far. I hope it will continue :)

Thursday, November 02, 2006

I had the crazy health visitor pay us a visit yesterday. I don't mind these health professionals coming round to check on Emily's growth etc, but what I do mind is their relentless stupid questions about my health. I'm a 36 year old professional woman who knows her mind, has a supportive family and network of friends. I have no problem discussing anything with my friends - that includes any health related matters. What bugs me though was this health visitors insistent nature in trying to get me to answer some rather unnerving questions about my mental health after having a baby. For example :

1. I have been able to laugh and see the funny side of things
a) as much as I always could
b) not quite so much now
c) definitely not so much now
d) not at all

now come one it isn't hard to see how many new mums could just answer a) and that's that - job done, health professional happy. Fair enough they may catch some mums with depression but wouldn't it be simpler just to ask the mums, maybe even get to know them better where it would be more fitting to ask these questions. Do the health professionals believe this is a fool proof way?

My favourite question was

10) the thought of harming myself has occurred to me:
a) yes, quite often
b) sometimes
c) hardly ever
d) never

do I answer a) to this one as I've been harming myself with left over chocolate from Halloween!
for those of you who are sleep deprived some soothing pictures to help!
